That's a good question. I would suppose you can't just be from anywhere. Players are invited to the combine, so unless you just show up with an agent and bully your way in, I don't know how you'd get to perform. Then there are pro days, which are held by colleges. I don't think any college would allow just anyone to get in their pro day. You'd prob be a street FA, like beerman was if anything. I think the draft is just fro college players.

Oh, I get it. I now know exactly where you are coming from now. No worries. I'll just have to remember that for future discussional reference. 8)

gandhi1007 01-06-2006 02:55 PM

Hey, how 'bout we draft Bush at #2 (assuming the Texans are dumb enough to draft Young at #1) & make a deal sending Aaron Brooks & Darren Howard to Atlanta for Matt Schaub. Now we've got a good QB, one hell of running game, & a 2nd & 3rd round pick to stiffen up the Defense. With the right GM (& a little luck), these deals can be done. There are a lot of good LB's in this years draft that will be there in the early second round. The best of which I believe is Bobby Carpenter (Ohio State). Many of us forgot about him, because he was hurt for the Notre Dame game. But, in the Texas & Penn State games (both big games~and losses) it was Bobby Carpenter (not A.J. Hawk) making the majority of big plays on defense.

This year, if done correctly, could be the best Saints draft ever!!!!

Just Brainstorming, guys.

GoldenTomb 01-06-2006 05:16 PM

I'm thinking in terms of a better overall draft. Picking Bush would give us an opportunity to have a better overall draft.

We have Deuce true. What's also very apparent is that Deuce has durability issues in his 6th year, and can't be depended on to last a full season carrying the load himself. Realistically he'll only have about 2 more years before he starts to decline, if he hasn't already started to. Not only would picking Bush retard that process, it would vastly improve the overall effectiveness of the entire offense. If you guys are listening to draft experts, they are saying that having a stud RB would not be a determining factor in drafting Bush or not. Bush will not be a 25-30 down back in the NFL. He will have to be supplemented by a cowbell RB(i think we have one of those). Can Bush become an everydown back....absolutely, but not right away. Putting him in the backfield w/an accomplished runner will allow him the learning curve to put on the extra weight he'll need to eventually carry the load on his own.

I think u have to think in terms of the overall draft instead of thinking about the first round. We would still be able to get a good QB in round 2. Would we be able to get anyone the caliber of Bush in the second? Not even close. Basically what im saying is

Rd. 1 - Reggie Bush
Rd. 2 - Best available QB

is much better value than

Rd 1 - Matt Leinart
Rd 2 - Best available RB

spkb25 01-06-2006 05:22 PM

hey that hwak kid would probably be a probowler for years on d too. maybe we trade down for two 1rst rounders and get the hawk kid. maybe try to get omar jacobs too in whatever round he will go.

sarge06 01-06-2006 05:40 PM

I agree Hawk is a d player of the year in the making

AllSaints 01-06-2006 05:58 PM

Wow the who taking bush thing is not a very smart 1 already turing on deuce I see Having deuce and bush would be great but that is very dumb..... we dont need another RB we need a QB.....

saintswhodi 01-06-2006 06:22 PM

I love how people put together MAdden teams instead of real football teams. I'll make it as simple as possible: WE CAN NOT AFFORD DEUCE AND BUSH. Period end of story. Unless we wanna pass on FAs for the next two years, until some of Deuce's guaranteed money is gone. Once we come back down to Earth, and stop forgetting this isn't a fantasy league we are talking about but the real NFL, we'll realize it's not a good idea to tie up 33-45% of your cap in two players at the same position. :?

DJLengai 01-06-2006 06:24 PM

I say keep Brooks becuase Leinhart is going to stink. Trade down for more picks and get a stud LT, trade Howard for an equally good DT, and get a hammer-head MLB. Gandy is getting old, we don't need 3 excellent DEs. We need to get real linebackers instead of the "wow! he's really fast" pieces of poop. I know a lot of people are anti-Brooks, but if Young goes to the Texans and we get Leinhart, that will go down about as well as us picking Alex Molden.

pakowitz 01-06-2006 06:28 PM

OMG whether we pick bush or leinert they are still gonna cost the same... they are gonna want 2nd pick money.... and most of that will be bonus.. roughly 20 mil up front... its not like rookie contracts are that freakin high....

You do realize, and I am hoping you do, the argument I am making is against having two high paid guys at the SAME position, as opposed to two high paid guys at DIFFERENT positions. You do realize Leinart is not a RB right, and he is a position of need. Once you realize that, we can continue.

AllSaints 01-06-2006 06:33 PM

wow brooks better than leinart did he just say that....................

DJLengai wat are u thinking????

I don't think that's what he was saying AS. I think he was saying we need to get rid of Mr. Brooks if you're nasty!!! :bananajoy:

GoldenTomb 01-06-2006 07:26 PM

Look i'm not for trading up to get Bush or anything ridiculous like that. But there are times where I think you draft for best player available. If Bush is sitting there @ #2, that's best player available. Bush could serve as RB, WR, KR, and PR. He can improve our team in many more ways that Leinart can. Not only would we have a "Lightning" to our backfield now, we have someone to put at WR since Horn's falling off. Plus we have a dual threat at KR. That will make our overall team better right away, and i don't see how that can be disputed. There would be two big contracts at RB, true. San Diego has two big contracts at QB, especially since one of them was franchised last year. Bush would get a huge signing bonus so it wouldn't be a big cap problem.

I see a much better team like this

QB - Garrard, McPherson
RB - McAllister, Bush
WR - Horn, Stallworth, Henderson, Bush
KR - Lewis, Bush

than

QB - Leinart, McPherson
RB - McAllister, Stecker
WR - Horn, Stallworth, Henderson, Lewis
KR - Lewis, Stecker

It's about the bigger picture.

spkb25 01-06-2006 07:31 PM

well i actually think smith was better then stecker

GoldenTomb 01-06-2006 07:33 PM

Oh yeah i forgot to state that i would be in favor of getting David Gerrard from Jax. He will be a starter somewhere in the league in the next year or so.

DJLengai 01-06-2006 07:51 PM

I didn't say Leinhart can't do well, just not in New Orleans. It's not going to work. He's from a precision powerhouse winning team which the Saints are not. He'll fold under the pressure. Let him go to a team where he can perform. If we can trade Brooks for a quality, consistent QB that's fine with me, but I don't see Leinhart playing well in N.O.

We need linebackers, a DT, and a LT a lot more than a QB. The team isn't going anywhere next season so keep Brooks and build up the D then trade Brooks after next season. A Ray Lewis type MLB or a John Henderson type DT would help a lot more as far as the team as a whole than switching QBs. Trading down for extra picks is what we really need. Deuce, Stecker, and Thomas can run the ball well enough for us not to pick Bush.

pakowitz 01-06-2006 07:56 PM

jesus christ people... do yall not understand the prospects of taking quite possibly the best running back ever........are yall just that blind?!?!?

saintswhodi 01-06-2006 07:58 PM

GT,

We already have explosive WRs, and a good RB. So we need another for what reason? KR and PRs can be found anywhere. MAthis was a 4th round pick of Houston, and he is going to the pro bowl as a rookie. We can take Devin Hester in the 4th for that. Sorry, I don't see how that helps more than a franchise QB.

Quote:

Yes it's true. It's also true San Diego has over 20 mil in cap space. We don't. IT also works cayse sue to that cap space, they paid Rivers a lot fo his bonus in his first year, so he was cheaper in the second. They also only took Rivers cause they thought Brees was a bust. Had Brees been playing at a pro bowl level, they would not have drafted another QB. That's foolish, just like taking Bush would be.

Quote:

Signing bonuses are guaranteed, and count against the cap. How exactly would a huge one not be a cap problem?

Quote:

It's about the bigger picture.
Sure is. We haven't had a franchise QB in 25 years or so, now we can get one, and not have to worry about that position for a long time. Or take Garrard, who has never been a full time starter, and hope it's good enough. Uh uh. Th eLeinart option looks WAY better to me.

pakowitz 01-06-2006 08:11 PM

teams with good qbs dont always win the super bowls... ask any nfl "expert" and they will tell u the way to win the super bowl is run the football and play good defense....

pak that sir you are 100% right on

Really? Let's go back through history. Brady, Brady, Johnson(fluke year), Brady, Dilfer(fluke year) Warner, Elway, Elway, Favre, Aikman, Young, Aikman, Aikman, Rypien, Simms, Montana, Montana. So of the last 17 superbowls, I guess it's only coincidence that 14 of those 17 winning QBs were GREAT QBs. And the repeat ones are all hall of famers. Only coincidental I am sure.

GoldenTomb 01-06-2006 08:21 PM

Come on now whodi. :-)

I havent heard anyone say that Leinart is the best college QB to come out. I think we have all heard that Bush may be the best RB to ever come out.

And i hear what you say about Duece and Bush, but the Texans were rumored to covet him, and last I heard they had a couple of good backs there already(D. Davis and V. Morency). If Bush has an impressive first two years, he could make McAllister expendable once he proves he can handle the load and before Duece's contract ballons out of control. I think a think a GM thinking about the big picture would not pass up Bush, and if by chance he is there, I would bet you any kind of money that the Saints would pick him, provided that they don't trade it away. A couple of mock drafts on ESPN post-Rose Bowl already had the Saints picking him, so we aren't the only ones who are saying this.

You say that we already have explosive WRs, a good RB, and we can use picks to get KR and PR? Well why can't we use one pick that would perform all of those duties very well? Then we could use our later picks for defensive purposes.

And lets be real now.

We have 1 explosive WR, because Horn will decline sharply(already has started to).

Lewis may be on the decline too(he's no spring chicken)

A first year QB is just not someone we need to head our offense right now. You say he will come in and contribute right away. Historically QBs are horrendous right away. Even the very best right now Peyton Manning, was horrendous. It doesn't strike me that this team is in rebuilding mode, so if they want to win right away(and we need to if we want this team to stay in LA) I don't see Leinart as being the best pick in that situation. Bush would be the way to go.

WHAT?? He has repeatedly been called the best college QB ever. I find it hard to believe you haven't heard that. Very hard. He is grading out as the highest QB ever as well. Even Kiper, since you used ESPN, says that. Wow.

Quote:

Um, the Texans only gave Dom Davis a 21 million dollar extension. We gave Deuce a 50 million dollar extension. Slight difference no?

Quote:

While for two years we can't sign FAs. Or at least any good ones. Good call.

Quote:

I'll take that bet, 100x out of 100. If Bush is there when we pick, we will move down one or two spots to the two teams under us, and hope we still get Leinart. We will not take Bush.

Quote:

I'd like to see those. Can you post them? From ESPN?

Quote:

Cause them combined would be cheaper than Bush.

Obviously, this isn't just any old first year QB. And I definitely wouldn't call Peyton horrendous his first year. All we need is for Leinart to be better than Brooks in his very first year. I bet he can do that.

pakowitz 01-06-2006 09:06 PM

na payton wasnt horrendous he only set the rookie record for INTs....

No, you're not listening to me, cause you haven't proven this was a good idea. And i'm close minded? What do you call yourself? You stated you hate Leinart, and don't think he will be crap. At least I admit Bush is a great player, just not a great player for us. Who's close minded again? Pot...kettle.

I am putting my money on Hawk and I put it down in writing in First and Gold. If the Saints pull off what I have predicted we will go to the Superbowl in the next 4 or 5 years. I do have some money to bet on this one too.
